Message from the Board – Joe Watts, President
Happy 2020! The New Year is here and has brought new challenges. The first challenge is NCDOT’s highway plan to extend SC Hwy 31 into North Carolina with ten (10) proposed “concepts”. The survey requesting input from the general public ended on January 10, but we need and encourage our members to continue to monitor this proposed highway.
The next challenge was identified by a group of concerned residents. These residents have written an appeal to the Town of Carolina Shores in opposition to a new park in our community. “South Park” is under construction at the old water tower site on Country Club Road. This appeal/petition is available for all supportive residents to sign at the golf course, the CSPOA office and clubhouse.
Brief timeline for opposition to South Park:
January 9, 2020-Residents voice concerns at the Town of Carolina Shores Meeting.
January 14, 2020-Residents organize and prepare appeal/petition.
January 16, 2020-Appeal sent to Community of Carolina Shores Golf Community via email, asking for support of the petition.
January 22, 2020-Brunswick Beacon reports on opposition to park, newspaper dated January 23, 2020.
January 22, 2020-Town of Carolina Shores sends email response to residents of Carolina Shores Golf Community with regards to the South Park opposition.
As I stated in a previous blast email, I am very proud of our residents for letting their voices be heard both at the January 8 POA meeting and at the January 9 Town meeting. Please mark your calendars for the following dates:
February 1, Saturday at 3:00 p.m., Clubhouse-Counting of votes for the election of directors
February 6, Thursday at 2:00 p.m., Town of Carolina Shores monthly meeting
February 12, Wednesday at 9:30a.m., Clubhouse-monthly CSPOA Board meeting
February 19, Wednesday at 2:00 p.m., Town of Carolina Shores Parks Commission meeting
Remember to mail in your POA annual dues, signed consent forms and ballots or bring to the CSPOA office.
Thank you!
THANK YOU TO OUR BULLETIN EDITORS LINDA RUGG and MERRILEE BURNS
IMPORTANT DATES:
February 1, 2020 at 3:00 p.m. – ANNUAL MEETING
February 12, 2020 at 9:30 a.m. – MONTHLY BOARD MEETING
ALL MEMBERS IN GOOD STANDING ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND.
IF YOU ARE NOT ON OUR FREE COMMUNITY EMAIL DISTRIBUTION LIST, PLEASE CONTACT THE BUSINESS OFFICE. YOU MAY HAVE MORE THAN ONE EMAIL ADDRESS PER HOUSEHOLD.
Communications – Kelly Wilson
While the holidays fade behind us and springtime begins to approach quickly, plans and work will soon begin to start over the next few months in different areas of the POA community. As most of you start your planning for cleaning and power washing around the house, a lot of the same will be happening around our areas.
The clubhouse which requires 24/7 attention has received a face lift on its outside and is in the process of having the front brush thinned out and cleaned up. Power washing will be done on the building and the rear ramp will get its face lift also. As always we ask that anyone, including clubs that use the clubhouse and has accumulated garbage, to please take care of this as there is no garbage pickup at the POA, and as always please return all items used when finished and assure all lights are turned out.
The recreation area will be receiving its annual power washing in the upcoming months. Work around the pool area will begin shortly. With the largest amount of work involved this year being at the pool area, the early spring deck opening will be pushed back to the main opening. Boccie courts, sidewalks and benches will all be power washed also.
ACC Corner – Joe Martere, ACC Chairperson
Despite the cold weather we had last week, SPRING is coming! This is a reminder that with the warm weather comes the need to clean up our properties. The Rules & Regulations and the DoR gives the guidelines we need to follow. For your information they read as follows:
Rules & Regulations, Section VI, paragraphs 1 & 2
1. Property Maintenance – Each Owner shall maintain his or her unit and all structures, landscaping, parking areas, and other improvements comprising the unit in a manner consistent with the community-wide standard and all applicable covenants.
2. Landscaping – Property Owners are responsible for maintaining their property grass and all plantings in a manner that will enhance and maintain the beauty and aesthetics of the community. It is the responsibility of all Property Owners to prevent the accumulation of trash, debris and any other unsightly litter that would detract from the cleanliness and beauty of the community. No Property Owner shall dump any yard waste (such as grass clippings, shrubbery clippings, tree branches, etc.) on any unimproved lot or common ground.
DoR, section 6, subsection 14
All lots, whether occupied or not, shall be well maintained and no debris or unattractive growth shall be permitted.
This language covers the removal of pine straw from landscaped areas and roofs, trimming of shrubbery as required by type of plant, and a general cleanup of any winter debris that may have occurred. The ACC will do a sweep of the community during March and April and will notify any member if their property is in need of attention. Please be a good neighbor and help maintain the pleasing aesthetics of our community.
RESERVE STUDY WORKSHOP – Kerry Jarrell
In 2009 the CSPOA Board commissioned a professional reserve study to establish a plan for the repair and replacement of CSPOA assets. The results of that study have guided the Board in its efforts to maintain the pool, clubhouse, tennis courts, etc. for the past ten years. In August 2019, the Board ordered a new reserve study to update the plan for the future. The new study was conducted by Reserve Professionals Inc. based in Raleigh, NC. The resulting report was approved by the Board in October 2019.
While a reserve study provides guidelines for renovation and replacement of assets, decisions on the timing and extent of those renovations still require input from the membership and approval by the Board. In order to obtain member input, the Board has scheduled a Reserve Workshop from 1:00-4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 25, at the CSPOA clubhouse.
The Board is seeking interested members to volunteer to participate in this workshop to assist in planning the projects that the CSPOA will undertake in the foreseeable future. This is not simply a community meeting for the purpose of sharing information. This is a work session, and participants will be expected to contribute their ideas, opinions and expertise on the projects discussed. The workshop will be limited to 24 participants.
Members with experience in construction, facility or project management, real estate, or any related fields are encouraged to participate. The most important criteria for participants will be an interest in helping the CSPOA plan and maintain its assets. Interested members should contact the CSPOA office to reserve their place in the workshop.
NOTE
You should have received your 2020 POA invoice in the first week of January. If you did not receive it or cannot pay it in full by February 28, 2020, please call the office. Payment plans are available, but you need to let us know. There will be a late fee if not paid by March 1, 2020 and subsequently, if not paid by June 1, 2020, a lien will be placed on the property. It is better to communicate early with us if you may have difficulty paying your dues.
NOTICE
For the members that use the POA clubhouse regularly, please remember to complete the Clubhouse Schedule Agreement for 2020. We need this information to know who is using the clubhouse and who to contact if we need to make any changes in the schedule. Merrilee and Linda appreciate you cooperating with this policy. Thank you.
REMINDER
Please remember to notify the office if you change your phone number, email address, name, or mailing address. It’s very easy to overlook this, but difficult for the office should we need to contact you. Thank you.
Recreation Committee – Sue O’Reilly
As we begin a New Year and new decade, we hope all our new and our long-time residents will join neighbors and friends in some of the social activities planned for our community.
February 8- SATURDAY-at 3:00 p.m. will be BINGO at the POA clubhouse. Each card will cost $1.00. There will be six (6) games played for "fun" prizes and eight (8) games played for money prizes as well as two (2) door prizes.
Bring a nosh, nibble or finger food for the interlude and we'll all share in the table fare! Water and soda will be there for you, but bring your own beverage, if you wish to. Bring a friend and have some fun or join some others that have come!
Men's Golf Association Activities – Chuck Karnolt
The Carolina Shores Men’s Golf Association has posted its tournament schedule for 2020 and has added two new events: The St. Patrick’s Day Crawl and a Member Guest.
The schedule of dates are as follows:

The CSMGA welcomes play from all; the weekly play (apart from the referenced schedule) is Wednesday (Stableford) and Friday a.m. (Typically low nets and closest to the pins on the par threes). Signup sheets are in the club house.
Annual dues are $25 and a handicap is needed except for the Wednesday match.

Tennis News – Bob Anthony
Well winter finally arrived, and our open tennis buffs keep on going like the energizer bunny. Open tennis is for all the POA members in good standing and their guests. Open tennis occurs every Monday, Wednesday and Friday starting at 9:00 a.m. during the winter months and reverts to beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the warmer months beginning on Memorial Day. Hope to see you out there.
Low Impact Chair Aerobics – Mary Timothy
Chair Aerobics meets every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday at 9:00 a.m. Yes, five days a week. The class is for everyone and there is no charge. You will need one-pound weights for beginners. Advanced students use your own judgment on weights.
Knit ‘n Natter – Diana Mardall
Did you know Carolina Shores has an evening knitting/crocheting/needlework group? We meet every other Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the POA Board room off the kitchen. If you knit, crochet or do other needlework, stop by and join us. We’d love to see new faces.
The group meets and shares patterns and expertise. We work on a variety of projects including sweaters, cardigans, afghans, shawls, cross stitch, arm knitting (that was a blast!), etc. Usually we even have dessert!
Our meetings in February will be on the 3rd and 17th at 6.30 p.m.
If you have any questions, email me at limeylady70@gmail.com or call me at 910-575-7804.
Garden Club – Carol Filkins
We had an interesting meeting in January, and all learned about palms. Theresa Nunn from Plants Direct was the speaker. We welcomed three new members, Teresa Crider, Debbie Cowan and Regina Hickey, and two guests, Sarah Johnson and Beverly Stepanian.
Tickets are available for the February 12 Card/Game party, which benefits the Brunswick High School scholarship fund. For $16 you can have a delicious lunch, a glass of wine and a lot of fun. There will be a silent auction with many great gifts.
New Horizons – Carla Urban
The New Horizons Singles Group is for any single resident of our Carolina Shores community. We meet on the second Tuesday of each month from September thru June. It is held at the POA club house at 5:00 p.m. We each bring a dish to share and our own beverage. Then we have some lively conversation about what is happening in our area. So please come and join us.
The February meeting needed to be moved this month to the third Tuesday of the month instead of the second Tuesday, which will make it on the 18th.
Anybody who would like to come and needs transportation, please feel free to call me at 575-2339 and it will be arranged for you. Looking forward to seeing you.
Book Discussion Group – Susie Riggs
The Carolina Shores Book Discussion Group met on Friday, January 17, in the POA library. We had a great time as we discussed this month’s book, The Lager Queen of Minnesota by J. Ryan Stradal. The book, which has been described as “a love story to Minnesota, craft beer and the power of second chances”, received positive reviews from all who were present. The meeting was followed by a delicious pot-luck lunch and craft beer tasting.
Our next meeting will be held on Friday, February 21, at 10:00 a.m. in the POA library. We’ll be discussing The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris. If you live in Carolina Shores and love to read, you are invited to join us!
Care Team – Beverly Rowse
The Care Team now has twenty-three (23) people available to help neighbors in need when a request comes to me. If you want to be a part of this team or if you no longer want to be on the list, please let me know. When a call for help comes to me, I reach out to the members on NextDoor. I don't get very many calls for help, but people are so very grateful for the assistance they get! It really doesn't take much to volunteer. Help with a small chore at home, an occasional ride, a temporary need for dog walking, etc. is usually what is needed.
So, neighbors, continue to let me know if you need help and I'll do my best to find someone. You don't have to be on NextDoor to request help. You can call me at 919-271-3005
